Clive Rees Boutique
Effects Pedals

Original analogue designs by Clive Rees, made in Cambridge England, to the highest boutique standards. The circuit boards are gold plated and hand soldered. All the controls are chassis mounted and hand wired in strong cast aluminium stompboxes.

These stompboxes are designed for use in the low light conditions of performance stages. The cream colour top provides best visibility of the control labels. The control knobs are well spaced, and have an obvious tactile feel between your fingers that defines their positions, even in the dark!.

Real Valve (Tube) Tones
Whether you want warmth added to a rhythm guitar, or some blues crunch, or screaming overdrive for a lead break, a proper thermionic valve is the real deal to achieve the very best tones.

Two Channels
The Spunky Valve Monkey has a foot-switch to stomp between two different voices. The RHYTHM voice is a bit smoother with more high-end clarity; the LEAD voice has more gain, aggression, and dirt-factor. However, you have total control over each of them, and so can use the two channels in any ways you want. The DRIVE control sets the tone style from warm to crunchy to dirty. The VOLUME then sets the sound level which can go very high when the DRIVE is strong, or pull it up to normal when the DRIVE is very low and clean. For clarity of use on stage, the RHYTHM on indicator lamp is yellow, and the LEAD lamp is red.

Robust Construction for Gigs
The box is die cast aluminium, with strong foot-switches. The miniature valve is a type developed for high reliability aerospace use, having no fragile glass, but a metal case like a vintage transistor. It is mounted on silicone shock absorbing material to the gold plated printed circuit board.

Studio Quality Sound for DI Recording
The sustain circuit uses a very low distortion studio compressor chip, and can offer variable sustain up to a near infinite crystal clear sustain. This, together with the natural soft clipping behavior of the valve, produce a very well behaved signal that is perfect for directly injected (DI) recording. It also sounds great when driving a simple solid-state amp, provided that a high quality guitar speaker, or big PA speaker, is used.

Power Requirement
Most valve based pedals require special higher voltage PSUs. However this Rees pedal is conveniently powered by an external normal 9V DC power supply (PSU, not included). It requires a PSU with current capability of 250mA or more, so any industry standard power supply intended for use with multiple guitar pedals should be suitable. e.g. 1 Spot PSU. (Beware that there are other PSUs for other types of equipment that have the plug polarity the wrong way round, and will not work with guitar pedals, and may destroy low cost pedals that do not have a protection circuit). Internally, Rees pedals have protection, and generate +9V and -9V for optimised signal headroom. The valve works off these safe low voltages.

Verdict

"This is an excellent UK-built stompbox that will add subtle overdrive to a clean amp or give a gentle kick to one that's already breaking up."

The Spunky Monkey covers a wide spectrum of high-gain sounds from clean to crunchy to quite dirty. It is great to use with valve amps, or to add valve-like tones to a solid state amp. The sustain circuit uses a very low distortion studio compressor chip, and can offer variable sustain up to a near infinite crystal clear sustain. The overdrive circuit is smooth and creamy with a wide range of distortion. A mix control allows precise choice of the amount of clean and dirty sound. A treble control lets you choose the tonal balance, or add a treble-boost effect. A volume control lets you balance your sound level, or drive a valve amp very hard to extract heavy tones out of the valves.  Effectively, the Spunky Monkey  is four pedals in one, with smooth mixing between them. This makes it very easy to find those magic tones that you want!

Buena Vibora

  • Tremolo Modulation
  • Studio Quality Compression
  • Low Noise Analogue Circuits
  • True Bypass Foot-switch

The Buena Vibora offers an attractive new tonal modulation effect, as well as traditional tremolo and rotary modulations. The vibora modulation vibrates different frequency bands in a pseudo random order, producing an effect that is very pleasant, smooth and enchanting. It is more complex, lush and textured than a tremolo, but not so way-out or aggressive as phasers or flangers. This pedal can alternatively be used as a traditional tremolo or rotary effect. Another innovation is the addition of a variable sustain control which helps fill out the sound space in a way that is satisfying, but not overpowering. The sustain circuit uses a very low distortion studio compressor chip.  Effectively, the Buena Vibora is four pedals in one!

The Black Rooster by itself covers a spectrum of high-gain clean sounds. It is also great to use with valve amps, and can extract extra crunchy tone out of any valve amp by driving the valves harder . The sustain circuit uses a very low distortion studio compressor chip, and can offer variable sustain up to a near infinite crystal clear sustain.  A treble control lets you choose the tonal balance, or add a treble-boost effect. A volume control lets you drive a valve amp very hard to extract heavy tones out of the valves.  Effectively, the Black Rooster  is three pedals in one!
